On the south-west coast of Corsica, two of the island’s most beautiful villages, Piana and Porto, are located less than 23 minutes apart and are separated only by the spectacular Calanche of Piana.
Piana, perched at an altitude of 450 metres, is listed among “The Most Beautiful Villages of France”, while Porto, once a fishing village, has become a seaside resort bordering by sea the Scandola Nature Reserve.
Together, they are two outstanding bases for discovering the most beautiful mountain and coastal landscapes of Corsica.
Staying in Piana or Porto: what to do?
Thanks to their geographical location, Piana and Porto offer a wide range of activities for the whole family.
Outdoor enthusiasts, whether drawn to the sea or the mountains, will find plenty to explore. Discovering exceptional natural sites such as the Scandola Nature Reserve (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Spelunca Gorge, the Calanche of Piana, or the Aïtone Forest, is a unique opportunity to experience the diversity and beauty of Corsican landscapes.
More athletic visitors can hike to Capo d’Orto or Capo Rosso, where unforgettable panoramic views await.
The Porto marina, lively both day and night, is the departure point for boat excursions to the Scandola Reserve or for enjoying sea views of the Calanche.
A visit to the Porto watchtower (paid entry) is not to be missed. Dating back to the 16th century, it houses a small museum and offers a spectacular view over the entire region.
Porto also features a natural pebble beach, formed by stones carried by the river of the same name as it meets the sea.
For beach lovers and seaside activities, the road towards Calvi offers three recommended spots:
-
Bussaglia Beach in Serriera (12 minutes from Porto): a long, wild pebble beach stretching over 500 metres
-
Osani Beaches in Osani (around 36 minutes from Porto): three pebble beaches—Focaghia, Cavone and Gradi—located in the Girolata Gulf
-
Gradelle Beach (45 minutes from Porto): a small beach of sand and gravel with a gentle slope, ideal for families
