Location : about 30 km in north of Porto
At the south extremity of the Scandola nature park, Girolata
is a part of the emblematic places of Corsica, whose the
photo is found on the cover of very many guide books dedicated
to the island. With its eucalyptus, its genoese fort, , its
genoese fort, its turquoise waters bay, Its houses clinging
to the steepest mountain slopes and its surrounding mountains,
this hamlet is an ideal place for that away-from-it-all-feeling….but
in summer when the tourists take other the place.
As there is no road, the best solution to reach it is by boat
: boat trips are organized mainly from Calvi and Porto.
Tjose with more stamina will go there by foot from the Croix
col, about 22km north from Porto.
This is a wonderful 4-hour walk through the maquis.
Once there, thanks to tourism, you will find all the amenities you need for a
short on longer ( restaurants, accommodation…. )
The worst was to be feared when there was talk of tourism development plans (
underground car parks, luxury holiday flats, cliff railway ).
Fortunatly, they were abandoned in order to preserve the natural environment
of the nature park.
